About Us
The Veterinary Pathology Image Database is a website created by the Servei de Diagnòstic de Patologia Veterinària – SDPV (Veterinary Pathology Diagnostic Service). This Service belongs to the Veterinary School of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. This image database consists of a selection of digital images and scanned kodachromes taken from necropsies, slaughterhouse inspection and histopathological slides performed since 1984. Most of these pictures belong to the archives of the SDPV, however some pictures have been kindly donated by other European academic institutions or private collections.
Objective
The principal goal of this interactive tool is educational. Most of these pictures have been taken for teaching purposes of veterinary and postgraduate students and veterinary clinicians or meat inspectors. In this way, the website has been designed to facilitate and promote self-learning of students and veterinarians, and to improve their knowledge and diagnostic skills in the field of Veterinary Pathology.
Language
To facilitate the access and learning of any person around the world, the main language of this website is English. However, some old pictures have comments in Spanish.
Nomenclature
In order to standardize the terminology used in Veterinary Pathology, we have tried to follow the guidelines provided by the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP).
Search Strategies
There are a number of data fields associated to each image and the contents of these fields are used to search for specific pictures or groups of pictures. The search criteria are fixed for each field. These include:
- Species: the species of the animal. For example: Porcine.
- Organ: the organ associated with the image. For example: Lung.
- Lesion: is the general lesion represented in the picture. For example: Pneumonia.
- Lesion modifier 1: is the subtype of lesion represented in the picture. For example: Interstitial.
- Lesion modifier 2: is an adjective that defines a subgroup of lesions included in Modifier 1. For example: Chronic. This field might sometimes be blank.
- General etiology: for didactic purposes images can be grouped by general causes of lesions or diseases. For example: Viral or Toxic.
- Disease: For example: Porcine circovirosis. This field might sometimes be blank.
